CELUNIQ

SUMMER CEREALS / COMMON MILLET

Panicum miliaceum L.

A true millet variety that is fertile, resistant to dormancy and diseases

High yields in fertile and moderately moist soils

Seed yield potential – 3.5 t/ha

Plant height - 100-105 cm

Leaves - 31.6 cm

Inflorescences - inclined to one side, medium length

Resistance to lodging - good, no need to use a growth regulator

It tolerates drought well

Very good disease resistance

Very high tolerance to dust mites (Sphacelotheca destruens)

The seeds are yellow

The weight of 1000 seeds are 5.2-6.1 g

Soils are not very demanding, but very dry, poor in nutrients or very heavy, wet and cold soils are not suitable

A soil pH of 5.6 and above is recommended

The optimal sowing time (in Slovakia) is the first ten days of May, and if the spring is very warm, the last ten days of April

The optimum soil temperature is 9-11 ˚C

As a cover crop can be sown until the end of May, the yield does not decrease

Insensitive to pests, but it is not recommended to sow under (or next to) corn, as it can be damaged by the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner))

Phosphorous and potassium fertilizers are applied according to the richness of the soil

Nitrogen fertilizers are used depending on the cultivation goals and cultivation experience

The sowing rate depends on the coarseness of the seeds and varies around 17 kg/ha, but should not exceed 28-30 kg/ha

Sowing depth - the optimum is 3-4 cm in sandy soils and 2-3 cm in heavier soils

When the plants reach a height of 20-30 cm, weed control is possible

If ripening is uneven, desiccants are used before harvesting

Optimum harvesting time - when the moisture content of the seeds is 17-18%

The seeds are already yellow and shiny.

Under different growing conditions than those found in these studies, cultivar parameters may differ from those given here

SOWING RATE

Recommended sowing rate:  22 (17-30) kg/ha
