FODDER PLANTS / FODDER RADISHES

Raphanus sativus var. oleiformis L.

Tetraploid fodder radish variety, class 2 beet nematode cyst resistance

The plants are tall

Blooms very late

Moderately resistant to nematodes

Forage radishes are suitable catch crops if sown in August. Grown fodder radishes are very resistant to frost, so their green mass can be used for fodder until the soil freezes. When growing green manure, it is possible to sow from spring to autumn, but no later than mid-September. Harvest before the seeds ripen (recommended at the beginning of flowering or before flowering, when the green mass is the largest).
When grown from seed, bees and other insects like to visit the plants during flowering. Flowers pollinated by them form pods faster, plants ripen more evenly.
If you are growing for fodder, you should sow earlier than for green fertilizer. Fodder radishes sown in July or early August grow much leafier, their stems are juicy, so all animals eat this green fodder willingly, even much better than meadow or pasture atoll grass.

Under different growing conditions than those found in these studies, cultivar parameters may differ from those given here.

SOWING RATE

Recommended sowing rate for seed production: 10-14 kg/ha, best to sow at 12-15 cm intervals

Recommended sowing rate for green fertilizer: 25-30 kg/ha
