FODDER PLANTS / BRISTLE OAT

Avena strigosa Schreb.

An excellent choice for green fertilization

Effectively kills nematodes

Thanks to allelopathy, it reduces soil weediness

A low-cost plant

It is a variety of diploid oats, plant height is 1-1.5 m, it grows well in all types of soil, it is an economically very useful choice to improve the soil by growing it as a green fertilizer.
The plants are resistant to drought, thanks to a well-developed root system, and grow well even in infertile soils. Very good resistance to rust, does not require the use of insecticides or fungicides during cultivation. Excellent first harvest, subsequent harvests are slightly smaller. Accumulates 13-15% of proteins. Both green mass and silage can be used for feed. Excellent digestibility and very good palatability of the feed.
These are plants that are perfect for killing pathogens and pests in the soil. Thanks to its fast growth and development and allelopathic properties, it perfectly reduces soil weediness. It is important to mention the nemotocidal effect of oat weevil, especially when growing one oat, because of this property this plant is often called a bio pesticide. It is recommended to fallow before maturity, that is, before the seed has matured, to prevent seeding and the emergence of false oats in that field when other crops are grown later. Drought tolerant. Sensitive to -3-4°C frosts.

Note: It is not recommended to sow cereals after oats, because oats can suppress the growth of cereals due to allelopathic action, nitrogen accumulation (binding) from the soil and decomposition products (phytotoxic acids). There should be no problems when sowing beans under them.

Under different growing conditions than those found in these studies, cultivar parameters may differ from those given here.

SOWING RATE

Recommended seeding rate for nematode control: 80-120 kg/ha

Recommended seeding rate for erosion control/covering: 25-50 kg/ha

Recommended seeding rate when sowing green mass (forage, green fertilizer): 50-125 kg/ha
